UnitedStatesPostOffice
There is something that most of us take for granted, the simple fact that
we can take a letter, stick it in an envelope and place a
stamp on it that costs less than 40 cents. We then take that
envelope and put it in a box outside our home and within a
day a truck will pull up and take that envelope and within
a couple of days it will be delivered anywhere in the United
States. I once heard a comedian that said he couldn't even
get a kid to lick the stamp for the price of it let alone
deliver the letter.
The United States Post Office, USPS, is a branch of the United
States Government that has the responsibility of providing
postal service within the United States. They also handle
letters and packages that come into or are leaving the United
States as well. The United States Postal Service was created
in 1775 by the second continental congress. It was established
according to a decree in the United States Constitution that
gave the government the right to establish post offices in
the US.
The United States Post Office is also the third largest employer
in the United States (after the US military and, believe it
or not, Wal-mart). They also operate the largest fleet of
vehicles in the world, with about 260,000 trucks in operation
at this time. These vehicles require about 800,000,000 gallons
of gas every year. So the next time you get a letter in the
mail, don't just think about where it came from, think about
how it got to you.
