SanDiegoAirport
The San Diego International Airport, also known as Lindbergh Field, serves
the San Diego Area with incoming and outgoing air traffic
to domestic as well as international locations. Known by the
IATA call letters of SAN, the San Diego International Airport
is the second busiest single runway airport in the world,
lagging slightly behind London's Gatwick airport in London
England. Another Interesting thing is that the San Diego Airport
only covers an area of some 661 acres which gives it the smallest
footprint of any international airport.
The San Diego International Airport was established in 1928
and originally had the name of the San Diego Municipal Airport
- Lindbergh Field because the San Diego area has the honor
of being the starting point of Charles Lindbergh's famous
flight. The Government took over the airport during the war
years and gave them a much larger runway which made them ready
when the jet age came into play.
The largest airline accident in California history happened
at the San Diego International Airport in 1978 when a midair
collision occurred between a 727 owned by Southwest Airlines
and a privately owned Cessna. Other than that they have had
a pretty safe track record.
