MountRushmore
Located in Keystone, South Dakota is a large granite sculpture that has thrilled
vacationers and casual visitors for decades. This is the 150
year national history and has 4 of the president's heads blasted
and chiseled out of the mountainside. The presidents that
are represented are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore
Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, and the park is maintained
by the National Park Service.
The mountain that is known as Mount Rushmore was originally
known as the Six Grandfathers by the native American tribe
of the Lakota. In 1876 the United States claimed control of
the area (a claim that is still disputed) and the mountain
was known by many different names, such as Cougar Mountain,
Sugarloaf Mountain, Slaughterhouse Mountain, and Keystone
Cliffs. In 1924 the work was given to Gutzon Borglum to complete
and he began work shortly thereafter. The entire project cost
just under a million dollars and amazingly not one worker
lost his life during the work.
